Fishmas in Mammoth: Opening Day of Fishing Season and Why Mammoth Lakes Is a True Year-Round Resort
Every year, the last Saturday in April (in 2026 its April 25th) marks one of my favorite unofficial holidays in the Eastern Sierra: Fishmas! It’s the official opening day of the regular trout fishing season in Mono County, and if you’ve never experienced it in Mammoth Lakes, you’re missing out on pure mountain magic. Why Mammoth Lakes Is a Four-Season Playground
Most people know Mammoth for its legendary winters: 400+ inches of snow annually, epic skiing and snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain, snowshoeing, tubing, and cozy après-ski vibes in The Village. But when the snow melts, the Sierra transforms into a fisherman’s paradise, hiker’s heaven, and mountain biker’s dream.
From spring through fall, the area explodes with activities: hiking and biking on hundreds of miles of trails, kayaking and paddleboarding on crystal-clear lakes, scenic drives, hot springs soaks, and of course, some of the best trout fishing in California. The beauty of Mammoth is that it never really closes. You can chase powder in January and trophy trout in April, all within the same stunning alpine backdrop. It’s why so many of us keep coming back. There’s always something epic waiting.
My Favorite Fishmas Fishing Spots Around Mammoth
Fishmas means thousands of trout get stocked across the Eastern Sierra, so the bite is on from the get-go. Here are three of my absolute go-to spots that deliver every time:
- The Upper Owens River Just a short drive from town, the Upper Owens is a fly-fishing gem and one of my personal favorites. Spring-fed and crystal clear, it’s famous for big, acrobatic rainbows in the spring and hefty browns in the fall. The meadow sections offer classic dry-fly action, and it’s accessible enough for wade fishing without needing a boat. Pro tip: Arrive early on Fishmas. Parking fills up fast, but the rewards are worth it.
- Convict Lake (Home – Convict Lake Resort) This stunning, deep alpine lake is a bucket-list spot for good reason. Towering peaks reflect off the water, and it’s stocked regularly with hard-fighting rainbows and browns. Whether you’re casting from shore along the easy perimeter trail, renting a boat from the marina, or launching your own, the fishing is straightforward and productive. Families love it here because of the scenic beauty and variety. Bait, lures, or flies all work. It’s also one of those places where even a slow day feels like a win because the views are insane.
- Easy Fishing at Pokonobe Lodge on Lake Mary (Pokonobe Lodge and Marina – Pokonobe Lodge and Marina) If you want low-stress, high-fun fishing right in the heart of the Mammoth Lakes Basin, head straight to Pokonobe Lodge and Marina on Lake Mary. This classic 1930s fishing lodge sits on the north shore and is perfect for beginners, families, or anyone who just wants to relax and reel them in. Rent a boat, canoe, or paddleboard, grab snacks and tackle from the fully stocked general store, and you’re set. Lake Mary gets heavy stocking, so the action is fast and forgiving, especially in the coves near the lodge. It’s my go-to when I want that easy-button day on the water without sacrificing the Mammoth magic.
