Shaping the Future of Adventure: Mammoth Lakes’ Parks and Recreation Master Plan Takes Flight

Nestled in the stunning Sierra Nevada mountains, Mammoth Lakes has long been a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, from skiers carving fresh powder to hikers exploring pristine trails. But as our community evolves, so too must our spaces for play, relaxation, and connection with nature. That’s why the Town of Mammoth Lakes is embarking on an exciting journey to refresh its Parks and Recreation Master Plan (PRMP), a blueprint that will redefine how we experience recreation in this alpine paradise for the next decade and beyond.
This isn’t just another bureaucratic document; it’s a living, breathing roadmap shaped by the people who know Mammoth best… You! Drawing from the latest trends in sustainable design, inclusive programming, and innovative facilities, the updated PRMP aims to elevate our parks, trails, recreation centers, and events to new heights. Imagine enhanced trail networks that seamlessly blend with our natural surroundings, state-of-the-art facilities that cater to all ages and abilities, and programs that foster community spirit while prioritizing environmental stewardship. It’s about building a legacy of quality of life that reflects our unique mountain lifestyle, grounded in best practices like eco-friendly infrastructure and adaptive recreation options that respond to emerging needs, such as climate-resilient spaces and tech-integrated experiences.
The process kicked off in late 2025, building on the foundations of previous plans that guided us through 2025. Now, with a focus on comprehensive planning, the town is committed to creating a document that’s not only forward-thinking but also deeply rooted in community input. This means incorporating feedback on everything from expanding multi-use trails to introducing new wellness programs, all while ensuring sustainability, think solar-powered amenities and habitat preservation, to protect the wild beauty that draws us here.
To get a deeper insight into this initiative, I recently sat down with Stuart Brown, the dedicated Parks and Recreation Director for the Town of Mammoth Lakes. With his background in recreation management and a passion for community engagement (he’s even served as the public information officer during challenging times like the COVID-19 response), Stuart shared his vision for a “best-in-class alpine recreation community.” He emphasized how the PRMP will address growing demands for year-round activities, from summer mountain biking to winter ice skating, while balancing growth with conservation. it’s packed with inspiring details on how your ideas can make a real impact.
But here’s where you come in: Your voice is crucial to making this plan truly exceptional. Whether you’re a local resident, a seasonal worker, a frequent visitor, or someone who simply loves hitting the slopes or lakeside paths, the town wants to hear from you. Share your experiences, suggestions, and dreams for Mammoth’s recreation future through the online survey at www.MLParkSurvey.org/open. It’s quick, user-friendly, and covers topics like facility improvements, program ideas, and trail enhancements. Plus, as a thank-you for your time, you’ll be entered to win one of three $50 Visa gift cards or an Annual Parks and Recreation Family Membership worth $600!
This community-driven approach ensures the PRMP isn’t just top-down planning, it’s a collaborative effort that captures the diverse perspectives of everyone who calls Mammoth home or heart.
