Fall Colors are not always the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Mammoth Lakes or the Eastern Sierras
In fact most people tend to associate the entire Eastern Sierra with fishing, hiking or skiing. Few people realize what the area has to offer with regard to fall colors and opportunities for photography or art.
Starting in Mid-September the fall colors at higher elevations begin to change and by October and November the brilliance of the aspens peak, offering great opportunities for picture taking, art or great hikes. Most of the colors are found around bodies of water such as streams, creeks and lakes with some being more easily accessible than others. Here are a few of my favorite places to see the fall colors around Mammoth Lakes:
June Lake – June Lakes is one of my favorite places for fall colors because its close to Mammoth Lakes and it offers a good diversity of photo opportunities close to the June Lake Loop Road. So if a person does not want to make the effort of hiking to higher elevations, or if they simply want an easy day of sightseeing… this is your spot. June Lake also has a great backdrop of dramatic mountains and a number of places to stop and eat.
Rock Creek Canyon – I like Rock Creek not just because of the great opportunities for taking pictures or hiking through aspen trees, but it also has pie! Yes Pie. The Rock Creek Lake Resort has a variety of pies and lunches that can be taken to go or eaten on their sun soaked deck. The big granite peaks and crystal clear lakes also add to the changing colors.
Lundy Canyon – Although this is a bit of a drive from Mammoth Lakes (35 minutes) its worth every minute. Although many colors can be seen from the dead end road, much more is visible if you get out and hike to the back of the canyon. The hike is along a stream and works its way gradually up hill for several miles. Some of the other sites that can be seen along this trip are beaver dams and small waterfalls.
So step out of the norm and come to Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra for Fall Colors.
